Detroit Lions unveil new uniforms (Photos)

The Detroit Lions revealed four new uniforms for the 2017 season, a new home and away, color rush, and throwback. Here’s what they look like.

Rod Wood, the President of the Detroit Lions, has been making big changes to the team’s brand in the past couple of seasons. In addition to a bigger video screen and better Wi-Fi in Ford Field for the upcoming season, Wood promised four new uniforms on April 13 in front of season ticket holders. The Lions also live streamed the unveiling on Facebook.

The Lions have not seen new uniforms since 2012, the date that Nike took over the league’s uniform policy. The new attire was announced in mid-February, and the Lions front office sent out a cryptic email with the new jerseys partially visible to season ticket holders back in March. A Twitter user saturated the colors used on the announcement to reveal the few changes just a few weeks ago.

Today, Wood and the Lions revealed the actual uniforms to the public, and the changes are small. One major change has already taken place, as the official font was switched up. Now you can see the changes on the uniforms instead of only on paper.

First up is the home/away jerseys. The changes are minor. Last season’s home was Honolulu blue with silver and black stripes on the sleeves, while the away donned a crisp white with blue and black stripes on the sleeves. Both use silver pants to complete the look.

The new 2017 uniforms are again blue and white, but now without the black stripe on the sleeves. The biggest change seems to be the pants, as the away uniform features slightly darker blue bottoms with a silver stripe going 3/4 of the way down, while the home features silver bottoms with a blue stripe. The helmets are more of the same, no longer is the black stripe in the middle, as more blue is inserted instead.

The next piece of attire unveiled was the color rush uniform. As predicted, and somewhat seen, the Lions color rush jersey is an all-silver combination with blue accents on the sleeve and white numbers. No other team in the NFL has silver color rush jerseys, so this at least is an original idea from Nike and the league.

Lastly, the throwback uniforms were revealed. An all blue top is paired with an all silver helmet and white pants, similar to the 1950s style, and nearly identical to those worn during the fateful 2008 season. I’m not entirely sure why the Lions decided to bring back anything related to that year, but here we are.

The Lions will likely wear the color rush jersey on Thanksgiving this year. The date for the throwbacks is still unknown.
